About Beijing Zoo

Beijing Zoo is the largest zoo in China and is located in the Xicheng District in the downtown area of the city. The zoo hosts over 500 different land animal species and over 500 marine mammal species and is home to over 14,500 animals in total. Visitors can expect to see rare Giant Pandas, Giraffes, Elephants, Golden Monkeys and a variety of rare reptiles. The parks grounds resemble traditional Chinese gardens with abundant streams, lotus ponds and several historical buildings.

The 220-acre zoo is so vast it is difficult to know where to begin. The main East Gate is home to the visitor information centre and the Giant Panda enclosure. Most visitors come solely to view the cuddly pandas at play, as Beijing Zoo is one of the best places to see them in the world. Arrive early to see the pandas without the crowds and to gain the best photographs. Follow the sightseeing trail to the lake, bear enclosure and the big cat sanctuary. There is a boat port for sightseeing on the water, and the Beijing Aquarium, Hippo, Rhino and Elephant Centre across the bridge. Close to the Northwest Gate lies the Deer Park, Children’s Zoo, Giraffe and Ape enclosure. Here, visitors can see the rare Golden Monkey in its habitat. Head to Southwest Gate to see Penguins and Otters in their rocky pools and to access the reptile zone. Visitors interested in visiting the endangered species of the zoo should, in addition to the Giant Pandas, check out the South China Tiger, Siberian Tiger, Przewalski’s Horse and Tibetan Gazelle. Break times are also catered for with cafeterias and restaurants, and there are plenty of disabled facilities for those who require easy access.

Beijing Zoo is one of the most popular attractions with plenty of public transport options to get there. Several bus services stop at Dong Wu Yuan stop close to the entrance gates. The zoo can also be accessed by subway, and there are boats cruising between the Exhibition Centre and Summer Palace stopping at the zoo. Depending on where the journey begins it can take between 10 and 45 minutes.

Beijing Zoo was the first zoo to open to the public in China. It was founded in 1906, during the latter years of the Qing dynasty. The zoo is famous for being a centre for zoological study and research and continues to attract animal lovers from all over the world with over 6 million visitors each year.
