Sprawling along the Han River, Yeongdeungpo-gu is a commercial and residential district south-west of central Seoul. It encompasses the island of Yeouido, which is a major hub for South Korea’s finance industry and is home to the iconic Times Square shopping mall.
Things to do in Yeongdeungpo-gu
Gaze up at the soaring skyscrapers as you explore the streets of Yeouido. The island is home to the iconic 63 Building, which opened to coincide with the 1988 Seoul Olympics and houses the world’s highest art gallery. Also of note is the Korea National Assembly Proceeding Hall and the SeMA Bunker, an underground museum operated by the Seoul Museum of Art. Its exhibitions include a history of the military bunker and its discovery in 2005.
Need a retail fix? Head to Times Square, one of the largest shopping malls in Seoul. In addition to the Shinsegae Department Store and an E-Mart, it houses a variety of big-name international brands and the CGV Multiplex cinema complex. A highlight of shopping here is the glass roof that offers direct sky views above.
Creatives shouldn’t miss a visit to the Mullae Art Village, a cluster of artist studios and workshops in a former industrial area of Yeongdeungpo-gu. Once known for its steel foundries, it’s now decorated with colourful murals and outdoor sculptures. After watching the artists in action, you can dine at one of the village’s restaurants or bars.
