Located south of the Han River, Nonhyeon-dong is a lively neighbourhood in the Gangnam district of Seoul. It’s home to several museums exploring everything from art and embroidery to plastic surgery, as well as a traditional market selling fresh produce and authentic Korean snacks.
Things to do in Nonhyeon-dong
If you’re interested in art and antiquities, head to Horim Museum. Founded by Yun Jang-seob in 1982, it showcases an array of Korean treasures. It’s divided into four main galleries where archaeological finds, glazed pottery and centuries-old stoneware pieces are exhibited, together with metal art and paintings.
One of the neighbourhood’s quirkier attractions is the BK Plastic Surgery Museum, which is located on the second floor of the BK Plastic Surgery Hospital. Its exhibits detail how surgical procedures are conducted on various parts of the body, with samples that you can touch and feel. The museum also features a virtual simulation of a plastic surgery procedure for those wanting a more in-depth look.
To experience the hustle and bustle of daily life, head to the Yeongdong Traditional Market, which is just around the corner from Nonhyeon Station. This old-style market features a variety of fresh produce and meats, as well as ready-to-eat snacks and meals. You can enjoy your feast in nearby Hakdong Park, an urban oasis that’s home to pagodas, tennis courts and several leafy walking trails.
