About Kyoto Imperial Palace

Kyoto Imperial Palace located in central Kyoto was once the ruling palace of the Japanese Emperors. The spectacular palace is open to receive visitors, and with picturesque gardens, striking architecture and an ambience which reflects the days of ancient Japanese dynasties, it’s one attraction in Kyoto visitors don’t want to miss.

Kyoto Imperial Palace is located in the Kyoto-gyoen, a large rectangular garden which dates back to the early Edo period. There are many ornate Japanese structures to visit within the palace including the Shishinden, which was an important ceremonial building within the grounds and the building of the Seiryo-den, where the Emperor would conduct meetings and formal affairs. The Kogosho, Ogakumonjo, and Otsunegoten are also notable buildings that were used for rituals, poetry recitals and the Emperor’s private residences. The site is also home to the Sentō Imperial Palace gardens that lie to the southeast of the Imperial Palace. The gardens contain bridged walkways, cherry blossom trees and a large pond sprinkled with islands which were once linked by a short canal. Two charming Japanese teahouses complete the verdant garden, and are the perfect place to imagine life in ancient Japan whilst admiring the natural beauty and scenery. It’s easy to lose one’s self for an entire day in amongst the palaces and gardens, however, visitors can explore other attractions nearby, as the Nijō Castle and Nishiki market are both 30 minutes’ walk. Alternatively, Philosopher’s Walk, Heian Shrine and the glorious golden temple and gardens of Kinkaku-ji are also accessible on foot.

It’s easy to reach Kyoto Imperial Palace from Kyoto Station, as the subway Karasuma line operates a train that runs several times an hour and stops directly outside the entrance. Alternatively, there is a bus route which runs to the palace or visitors can walk from Central Kyoto in just under an hour, pausing to admire the myriad buildings and temples along the way.

Kyoto Imperial Palace was originally the Imperial Palace of Japan until the capital was relocated to Tokyo. Even after this period, the Showa and Taisho Emperors chose to hold their coronation ceremonies in Kyoto. Today, Kyoto Imperial Palace is a majestic and awe-inspiring reminder of the Edo period, visitors flock to the palace and gardens in their millions, eager to imagine what life was like in ancient Japan.
