About Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls

One of Rome’s four ancient Papal basilicas, St. Paul Outside the Walls is named for its position outside of the Vatican City State within Italian territory. It stands as the second largest basilica in the Italian capital and is owned by the Holy See, with the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul its biggest annual celebration on January 25.

While the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls had largely retained its character for 1435 years, during roofing repairs in 1823 a fire started that caused extensive damage, leading to its reconstruction during the mid-19th century. The Neo-Classical covered portico in front of the facade was added during this time, together with 80 nave columns and a stucco-decorated ceiling, although its original structure with one nave and four aisles was maintained. A few traces of the mosaics of Pietro Cavallini on the basilica’s apse that survived the fire were incorporated into the new basilica, while the mosaics on the triumphal arch are the original 5th century designs. The basilica’s cloister, built by Vassalletto in the early 13th century, is considered one of the most beautiful of the Middle Ages, with inlays of coloured glass mosaics on its multi-shaped double columns. The basilica contains the remains of St. Paul which were placed into a sarcophagus during the 4th century and now lay in a marble tombstone within the Basilica’s crypt. It was excavated as recently as 2006, with only one of its two narrow sides visible to pilgrims.

The Basilica S. Paolo train station is the closest stop to the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, which connects to central Rome to the north. Alternatively, there are numerous buses that run along Via Ostiense on the basilica’s eastern edge.

The Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls was founded by Roman Emperor Constantine I in the early 4th century on the burial place of St. Paul and underwent extensive expansions and modifications throughout the centuries. Due to its location outside the Aurelian Walls, the basilica was damaged during a Saracen raid of the 9th century and later fortified into the town of Joannispolis which existed until an earthquake struck in 1348.
