Things to do in Downtown
Foodies are in luck because Downtown Kansas City is packed with authentic barbecue restaurants. Arthur Bryant's serves up some of America’s tastiest smoked meats, served with its famous fiery house sauce. Over the years it’s earned the tick of approval from Harry S. Truman, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and a host of other USA presidents.
Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Jazz District is a mecca for music lovers. You can stroll around the lively streets or visit cultural attractions like the Mutual Musicians Foundation, a former African-American union hall that’s been hosting late-night jam sessions since the 1930s.
Sports lovers shouldn’t miss the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, which chronicles some of America’s greatest African-American teams. From the KC Monarchs to the New York Black Yankees, it’s packed full of rare memorabilia.
For a taste of Kansas City’s food scene, head to the historic River Market district. The neighbourhood features farm-to-table restaurants, colourful flower markets and gourmet delicatessens. While you’re there, enjoy a caffeine fix at Quay Coffee, a trendy cafe housed in a converted brick warehouse.
