About Canal Street New Orleans

Defined by the historic streetcar lanes that stretch down the centre of the road, Canal Street in New Orleans is a central thoroughfare of the city, important both for its location and historical, traditional significance. It once divided the French Quarter of the city from the American Sector and today continues to signify this central importance, defining the boundaries of the Central Business District. Stretching from east to west, the Mississippi River marks one end of Canal Street, by a collection of cemeteries in the middle of the city marks the other, and the road is further divided six lanes of traffic.

A popular activity on Canal Street is shopping, as this was once the main shopping district of the city and remains a key retail hub, offering famous international fashion brands in department stores and independent boutiques lining the road. There are also various event and performance venues in the area, where visitors can discover the local culture by attending a play, opera show or concert in buildings like the Varieties Theatre or enjoy a film at any of the old cinemas. A number of impressive hotel buildings are also found along Canal Street, and other beautiful architecture includes the Audubon Insectarium, which hosts an extensive museum decorated in white marble, displaying a range of insect related exhibitions. Along Canal Street, visitors can also stop at many gourmet restaurants, appealing cafes and interesting bars, ranging from affordable, local cuisine to luxurious fine dining opportunities.

Canal Street is less than 20 kilometres from the nearest airports, Lakefront Airport and Louis Armstrong International Airport, which have shuttle services and local transport links into the city. The port, central bus station and central train station are all under five kilometres away from Canal Street, meaning visitors can usually walk to the road from major travel hubs, or take a tram or bus service to the centre. To enjoy the iconic experience of Canal Street, visitors can take a historic streetcar down the centre of the road.

The development of New Orleans in the 18th century created a greater divide between the French Quarter, inhabited by first settlers in the city, and the American neighbourhoods, occupied by new residents, and Canal Street became the dividing line. As a place of neutral ground, it became a centre of the city, used by both sides for recreation, shopping and entertainment.
