Very basic hotel, however the staff and service was very good.

This hotel used to be a YMCA that they converted into an hostel type. It is right in the heart of downtown, very easy access to everything, the gaslamp district, Horton Plaza Mall, boutiques, restaurants and minutes away from the Harbor where you can catch the ferry to Coronado Island (highly recommended) and bikes/vespa rental...without forgetting the fact that you're near every buses, trolleys... The hotel is always kept very clean, you do share bathroom/shower, but they are conveniently placed at every floor and there's always one available. The staff is very nice and helpful. The only thing is that sometimes at night time people getting back into their rooms were pretty loud but has nothing to do with the hotel, only with people non taking into consideration about anyone in the hotel.

Rooms are tiny, and carpets don't seem too clean. The 'city view' room is facing Broadway! Not much of a view, but loads of noise instead. Don't think it's much different than a youth hostel, but does not qualify as a one/two start hotel as it claims to be. One is likely to encounter several characters around. The lobby is charming though.

Location. Small, no parking, shared bathroom. It wasn't too bad but it didn't wow me.

I did not have to wait for the bathroom at any time which was good. The window of my room was absolutely filthy on the outside. Great location to Amtrak station, trolley, buses and Hortin Plaza shopping mall.

I was very impressed with the hotel. It is not for someone looking for luxury. All I want is a bed and a shower. The beds are pillow top design, very comfortable. Even though the bathrooms are shared I never had a problem finding an available bathroom. The staff was very helpful. Housekeeping did a great job. They clean the bathrooms multiple times 24 hours a day. The front desk is staffed by helpful employees. My requests were taken care of immediately. The airport bus is less than a blockaway. Very convienent location for bus and trolley. Guests are able to use the fitness center. I enjoyed my stay and will stay again.

Nothing. It reminded me of a scary hotel in Europe with dirty homeless people wondering around.

This is an historic YMCA building converted to a hotel. That means that the rooms are downtown NYC small and there are unisex shared bathrooms (like in Starbucks but with a shower) available spread along the floors in pods of 4 - no room is very far away. When the maid makes up your room she leaves a fresh towel on your bed every day. I had no problems with crowding or overuse but the hotel was not full. There are several room sizes; I chose the smallest which had a desk, single bed, and wardrobe - plus a small flat screen TV on the desk, a phone, and free wireless internet). I spent almost no time in the room except to catch the late news and catch up on email just before bed. There were no signs of pests of any kind. Staff was knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. Business center PC's w/ a printer were available as were vending and ice machines. Restaurant served good food, promptly. I would go back if on a budget. Location is very convenient - on the Trolley Line at American Plaza. Expect to here the trolley cars and the harbor fog horn in certain weather.

I chose this hotel because of the cost and it's very close proximity to the trolley line. This would be important after the Rock 'n Roll Marathon in San Diego. The hotel is also very convenient to Horton Plaza and Harbor Drive. The only downfall is the noise factor. Doors slam shut and regular talking seems to echo at 3:00 a.m. Additional outside screaming by people seems so much louder late at night. So getting a good and quiet night sleep was not possible. Other than this, this was a good hotel and well worth the cost.

The staff was friendly. There was not even a bathroom in the hotel and it was super hot all night.

We arrived not really knowing what to except. The buliding was impressive and we spent some time examining the beautiful arches and pictures in the lobby. The rooms were small and had a few stains on the carpet but overall were clean. Sharing the bathroom wasn't a problem, they too were clean and one was always available when needed. Spending time in the room wasn't reason for the trip, so all that didn't matter. The atmsophere and low rates more than made up for the little inconviences. We had a delicious breakfast in the restuarant. Staff was friendly. It was a block from the Santa Fa train station. And it was a nice walk to Seaport Village. I just wish I had more time to explore other areas of downtown San Diego. I would definately stay at 500 West Broadway on my next trip to SD.

This property is an old YMCA. It was great if you want to experience dorm life again.Doors slamming, dirty bathrooms, coed bathrooms which some took to mean they should use at the same time, loud, obnoxious guests in the hall. IN six days I never got a full nights sleep, not one. I approached the staff on several occasions and they were curteous but full of excuses. The noise was blamed on the holiday weekend. This was not great experience in many years of travel.

Staffis friendly. It is smaller than a dorm room, shared facilities and no A/C. Staff was very friendly (even told us ghost stories). Most of the people staying in this hotel are foreign kids learning English. So they almost use it as an apartment, they are all very friendly. But we got a peep show from a Brazilian. There are no air conditionings, and the fan span wasn’t even as long as one of my arms. So going here during the summer would probably be very miserable. I rather enjoyed the "experience" but as a young adult only interested in using it as a party crasher place. That was the only useful part about it.

Great deals; Very nice single accomandation; Clean facilities; Nice Historical Hotel at theHeart of SanDiego Downtown. Not too far from anything major tourist sites: San Diego MLB Petco park; Balboa Zoo; Train station, SD conventions & marinas. Super! Super! Super!

500 West is a great place if you dont want to spend a lot of money to stay in Downtown SD. It's a short walk to everything down there. The staff was great and accommodating. No problems whatsoever. I see people that complain that the rooms are too small and that you have to use a shared bathroom. Well... when you sign up for this you should know that. The rooms are small, but if you know that going in you'll be fine. Beds comfortable. It's noisy but you're in the middle of downtown, so expected. Shared bathrooms clean. So like I said, if you know that this is not a regular hotel you will be totally fine with it. Definitely worth it!

The price; it is a YMCA type hotel. Community baths; twin beds; small room, etc. This is the local YMCA and the rooms are small, with either two twin beds or one regular bed per room. The bathrooms, showers, and sink are separate and communal. When you are thinking of a hotel or motel room this is definitely an adventure. The rooms are clean, though limited and the baths are clean; the hotel staff is friendly and efficient; the cafe is good when open which is during the day.

It was in the center of the city. It was easy to access to sightseeing spots, public transportation, and shopping area. It was safe and not expensive. The staff was very informative.
