Prague’s Staré Město, or Old Town, is the historic heart of the city and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site centred around a 12th century square. Romanesque, Baroque and Gothic buildings line its streets while the iconic Astronomical Clock watches over.
The Old Town Hall dominates the square with a collection of ancient houses that were transformed for civil purposes from 1338 and topped by the Astronomical Clock in 1410, together with the sky-soaring spires of the Church of Our Lady before Týn which has served as the main church of the Old Town since the 14th century. In the northwestern corner stands the more modern 18th century Baroque St. Nicholas Church which gleams a brilliant white, behind which sprawls the former Jewish town of Josefov where the community had traditionally settled since the 10th century. While vast areas of the quarter were demolished at the turn of the 20th century, six synagogues including the 13th century Old New Synagogue, the Old Cemetery and the Old Jewish Town Hall still remain and form part of the captivating Jewish Museum. Another of the Old Town’s most noted religious buildings is the 14th century Bethlehem Chapel which played a major role in the Bohemian Reformation and was where the 15th century church reformer Jan Hus once preached. His statue now stands at the centre of the Old Town Square, with support for his teachings influential in the Hussite Wars against the Roman Catholic Church. The Old Town connects with Malá Strana across the iconic Charles Bridge, lined with Baroque statues and is considered one of the most impressive pieces of Gothic architecture in the world.
The Staroměstská metro stop is just a short walk from the Old Town Square or visitors can jump on board a bus with a stop even closer at the Staroměstské náměstí. The Old Town itself is best explored on foot, with winding, narrow streets to discover and fantastic views from the Charles Bridge.
The Old Town Square was originally planned as a central marketplace, with the surrounding medieval settlement separated from the outside by a wall and semi-circular moat which connected to the Vltava River. It was during the mid-14th century that the Old Town of Prague prospered, becoming renowned for its craftsmen and emerging as one of the most significant settlements in Central Europe.
