About Victoria Park

Named for Queen Victoria, this public park in bustling Causeway Bay is an oasis of calm on the edge of Victoria Harbour. What is now a popular weekend hangout spot in the city, Victoria Park was originally established as a shelter for fishing boats and yachts to seek refuge during the typhoon season and then transformed into a public park in the 1950s.

A statue of Queen Victoria herself welcomes visitors at the main entrance to the park along Causeway Road, having been returned by Japan after it was taken to be melted down during World War II. It has long been a centre for recreation in the city, home to Hong Kong’s first public swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts, and numerous different playgrounds, as well as small ponds used by remote-control boat enthusiasts. Early morning tends to be one of the busiest times, with elderly locals in the midst of choreographed tai chi sessions and joggers getting their daily dose of fitness in. Each year Victoria Park ignites in the lead up to Chinese New Year with the Lunar New Year Fair, and the Hong Kong Flower Show, while those visiting during the Mid-Autumn Festival will witness lanterns beautifully illuminate the park.

Victoria Park is located near two different MTR stations and just a short walk from either Causeway Bay or Tin Hau stations. There are also numerous bus routes which stop near the entrance to the park in addition to the city’s charismatic trams.

Just before Hong Kong’s reunification with China, local artist Pun Sin-Lui poured red paint over the park’s Queen Victoria statue and smashed her nose with a hammer. He was making a statement about what he saw as Hong Kong’s “dull colonial culture”, with the red paint symbolising China and the cultural reunification that he supported.
