Mesa dates back around 2,000 years to the Hohokam people who built the city’s original canal system. These canals were incredibly sophisticated during their time, some stretching to 27 metres wide and three metres deep. Their irrigation system began to transform the nearby Sonoran Desert into an agricultural oasis, bringing wealth and produce to the region. In the late 1800s, Mormon pioneer Daniel Webster Jones arrived in the area from Utah, and settlements around Mesa were formed. The city today is a charming blend of cultures, cuisines and history.
