As one of Montreal’s trendiest districts, Mile End is an eclectic mix of hipsters, artists and holidaymakers. It’s peppered with a smorgasbord of ethnic restaurants, reflecting its multicultural roots. For gastronomes, a food tour of its colourful offerings is a must. Of course, no visit to Mile End would be complete without poutine, Quebec’s provincial dish featuring chips, cheese curds and gravy.
As well as fabulous fare, Mile End is also one of Montreal’s most stylish shopping districts. It celebrates local artist and designers, with independent boutiques peppered throughout the area. From haute couture and homewares to stationery and custom sneakers, it’s a fantastic place to pick up unique souvenirs.
Officially, Mile End covers a 10 block footprint. From Old Montreal, Mile End is a one hour stroll along the bustling Saint Laurent Boulevard. Alternatively, the neighbourhood is a 20-minute ride to Laurier metro station, which is just steps from Mile End.
Originally, Mile End was a mecca for Greek and Jewish immigrants. Today it’s a wonderfully multicultural neighbourhood and is coveted as the hotbed of Montréal’s world famous music scene. For a cultural fix, check out the indie bands and live music acts at iconic venues like Théâtre Rialto.
