Old Town Chinatown is the presiding Chinatown of north-west Portland, Oregon and includes both the Old Town Historic District and the Japantown Historic District. The region is separated from surrounding neighbourhoods by the Willamette River, Northwest Broadway and West Burnside Street. Old Town Chinatown’s two districts are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Old Town Chinatown blends history with modern tourism, offering a concentration of cultural sites alongside popular shopping and dining opportunities. A few of the highlight attractions include the Saturday Market and the Shanghai tunnels as well as the city’s oldest public artwork, the Skidmore Fountain. Decadent local cuisine includes long-term favourites Dan and Louis Oyster Bar and Voodoo Doughnut. In addition, the 24 Hour Church of Elvis remains a notable artistic exhibition that includes displays and items for purchase.
Public transportation options around Old Town are anchored by the Amtrak Union Station and Greyhound bus station. The MAX Light Rail also makes multiple stops throughout the area including at Old Town/Chinatown and Skidmore Fountain.
Old Town Chinatown is the city’s oldest district, dating back to 1975. Within two years it was declared a National Historic Landmark and has since blossomed into a thriving popular urban scene.
