About Temple Of Heaven

Temple of Heaven is in the Dongcheng district of Beijing to the south-east of the capital. It was the place where Emperors of the Qing and Ming Dynasties would congregate in the temples to worship and pray for a good harvest. The park covers an area of 273 hectares and is known to be the largest cultural museum complex of this kind in the world.

Begin an exploration of this vast complex in the Inner Altar. The buildings and temples are located within this area and comprise three main halls. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is one of the main temples to explore. It’s 36 metres in diameter and 38 metres tall, with a marble stone base and is constructed over three levels. The interior is painted with intricate designs and bold colours which are incredible to view. It has four inner, twelve middle and twelve outer pillars, each representing the seasons, lunar months and hours in a day. All the buildings are adorned with dark blue roofs which are said to represent the Heavens. The Imperial Vault of Heaven is surrounded by Echo Wall which was used to pass sounds and messages over long distances. Continue heading south to Circular Mound Altar to admire the decorative and intricately carved dragon sculptures. The park itself is particularly extensive and comprises of play areas, exercise and game zones. There are also areas to visit in the Outer Altar region of the park. Heaven Heart Stone or the Sun Stone is in the centre. During ancient ceremonies, the ritual officer would read while standing on the stone, the sound echoing all around the park. The Divine Kitchen Courtyard and Firewood Stove took care of the offerings. The ancients believed that the smouldering smoke from the fires led straight to the Heavens.

Several bus routes operate from all over Beijing to Temple of Heaven. The bus routes all stop at different gates, so plan the visit beforehand to decide at which gate to disembark. There are subway stops which are a short walk away and taxis are available throughout the city. It takes 45 minutes to walk from Tiananmen Square and just over an hour to walk from Forbidden City.

The Temple of Heaven complex was constructed between 1406 to 1420 and was renamed and extended in the 16th century during the reign of Jiajing Emperor. It became a temporary command centre in Beijing during the Boxer Rebellion in the early 1900s which led to serious damage to the complex. In 1918, the temple became a park which has since remained open to the public.
