Ohori Park is a lush oasis in the heart of central Fukuoka. It's anchored by a large lake filled with ducks, coots and other water birds. A two-kilometre-long paved walking trail wraps around the lake and is popular with joggers and dog walkers. Much of the shoreline is shaded by leafy willows, cherry blossoms and oak trees.
In Japanese "ohori" means moat. The name is a nod to the pond's former role as part of the moat system for neighbouring Fukuoka Castle, an ancient stronghold built in the Edo Period. A series of walkways lead to a trio of islands in the middle of the lake, which are connected by graceful stone bridges.
Visit the beautiful Ohori Park Japanese Garden, which is filled with perfectly clipped hedges and ornamental Japanese maple trees. Kick back with a cup of oolong in the serene tea pagoda. On the southern fringe of Ohori Park is Gokoku Shrine, a magnificent gold building fronted by a soaring wooden torii gate.
Getting there
Ohori Park is a 10-minute drive west of Fukuoka’s city centre. It's just steps from Ohori Koen Station, which is a 10-minute train ride from Hakata Station. Local buses stop outside the park.
