About Kyoto Tower

Kyoto Tower is the tallest structure in the city of Kyoto and a towering contemporary landmark, located in an area of Japan famed for its ancient temples and shrines.

The 131 metres tall, iconic, Kyoto Tower has a 360-degree observation platform which affords incredible views of temples, gardens and the Kyoto cityscape. If visitors wish to venture even higher, head to the circular Sky Lounge and Restaurant where visitors can dine on delicious Japanese cuisine while enjoying the vistas. Kyoto Tower is also home to underground shopping malls, cafes, and traditional tea rooms. The city Aquarium is a few minutes’ walk away, and is the ideal family day out where visitors can view penguins, seals and a wide variety of marine life indigenous to the area. Kyoto Station Building, a few minutes’ walk from Kyoto Tower, is home to cinemas, galleries, shopping malls, and entertainment areas. From the station, visitors can easily reach many popular tourist attractions including Kinkaku-ji with its golden temple and gardens, Nijō Castle and Kyoto Imperial Palace. Venture a little further to Arashiyama, one of Japan’s most famous attractions,to discover tall bamboo groves, lakes, temples and a monkey sanctuary. It’s a photographer’s paradise and accessible by train via the San-In Line. Staying closer to home, Nishiki Market is a short walk from Kyoto Tower, with its many restaurants and food stalls, a perfect place to browse for picnic treats or stop for lunch. For travellers wishing to immerse themselves in Kyoto nightlife, there are many fun karaoke theme bars and eateries throughout the city.

Kyoto Tower is located opposite Kyoto Station, therefore, can be reached from other areas of the city via several subway lines and bus routes. Many of the local attractions such as Sennyu-ji temple and Fushimi Inari Shrine are between 30 and 40 minutes’ walk from the tower.

Kyoto Tower was constructed in the 1960s to coincide with the Summer Olympics of 1964 as a modern focal point of the city. The interior and exterior structure were designed to withstand typhoons, earthquakes, and winds of up to 321 kilometres per hour. One million people visited Kyoto Tower in its opening year, and today, the structure still sees a huge influx of tourists keen to view the city from its observation platform and to dine at the circular, three floor Sky Lounge at the top of the tower.
