About Atsuta Shrine

Visited by nine million people every year, Atsuta Shrine is a top tourist attraction in Nagoya and one of the most important centres of ancient beliefs in Japan. Devoted to the Sun Goddess Amaterasu, it is a building of worship and veneration, and stands in the south of the city, surrounded by natural woodland. It also honours the “Five Great Gods of Atsuta” and is a key destination of narratives concerning the sacred treasures of Japan, making it a nationally significant landmark.

One of the three sacred treasures of Japan, the Kusanagi ancient sword, is at the Atsuta Shrine, and although the public cannot see the sword, they can hear about the many stories associated with it. Visitors are free to explore the shrine, take in the stunning, classic Japanese architecture and walk in the beautiful forested surroundings. In the grounds, visitors can try a traditional dish of Nagoya, Kishimen noodles at the restaurant, or visit some of the smaller, quieter shrines in the compound. The Bunkaden is the treasure hall of Atsuta Shrine that holds 4,000 historical relics, including documents, domestic objects, and military weapons, 174 of which are important cultural properties of Japan.

Atsuta Shrine is only a three-minute walk from the nearest railway station, Jingumae Station, and numerous trains from Nagoya central station travel here daily. Visitors can also journey by train into Atsuta Station via Japan Railways, or take the metro to Jingū-Nishi Station, both of which are within a ten-minute walk of the shrine.

The history of Atsuta Shrine dates back to the 1st century when originally built to protect the legendary sword and sacred treasure of Japan, “Kusanagi-no-tsurugi”. The complex was bombed during World War II, destroying many of the buildings and inspiring the reconstruction of the shrine in the 1950s. The ancient significance of the shrine means many festivals take place here throughout the year, including an annual planting ceremony in gratitude for the agriculture of the area.
