Located a few blocks from Austin’s State Capitol, the 8.9-hectare Texas State Cemetery is renowned as the final resting place of numerous influential and legendary Texans. As you walk through the cemetery you can see the tombstones of honoured Texans, from governors and Texas Rangers to authors and the city’s namesake, Stephen Austin.
Dating back to 1851, Texas State Cemetery is also a historic landmark in Austin home to a Vietnam Veterans monument and remembrance statues for the wounded soldiers who have fought in America’s wars. You can see the graves of 15 signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence, five First Ladies of Texas and two American Revolutionary War veterans.
Don’t miss seeing the Tomb of Albert Sidney Johnston, an esteemed military general who served in three different armies. After visiting the cemetery, stroll along East 7th Street to find a wealth of dining options, including the Prohibition Creamery ice-cream shop and Kebabalicious Turkish restaurant.
Getting around Texas State Capitol
The Texas State Cemetery is five minutes’ drive from the centre of Austin or about 15 minutes if you catch the number 485 bus to East 11th Street. You can drive there in 10 minutes from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
