About Skansen

Located on the island of Djurgården in Stockholm, Skansen is Sweden’s first open-air museum and zoo. It was opened in the late 19th century and designed to illustrate life across the country prior to the industrial era.

Skansen has long been a model for other open-air museums across Scandinavia, originally opened as part of the Nordic Museum when Artur Hazelius brought in around 150 structures from across the country. They were shipped piece-by-piece and then reconstructed on site across 75 acres, forming a landscape reflecting Sweden’s diversity. These structures include 16th century Älvros farmhouses and a late-17th century Skogaholm Manor house, as well as a full replica of a 19th century town in addition to a field of tobacco. Of the buildings that stand at Skansen, only three are not originals, having been designed based on real-life structures Hazelius had encountered. Tradesmen in period dress, including shoemakers, bakers and blacksmiths, all demonstrate their craft, and displays of folk dancing and music are often performed at the museum. There’s also an open-air zoo at Skansen, exhibiting a range of native Scandinavian animals, including moose, otter, reindeer, grey seal and wolverine, and a farmhouse where a few rare breeds can be seen. The Skansens Bergbana funicular railway has been transporting visitors to the museum site since 1897, and in the lead up to Christmas, Skansen is a particularly popular destination for the Christmas market held in its central Bollnäs square.

Skansen can be accessed by both bus and tram, with regular services from the centre of Stockholm, as well as by ferry which departs from Slussen at the end of Gamlastan and drops visitors at Skeppsholmen and Allmänna gränd on Djurgården Island. The island is connected to the centre of Stockholm by a bridge, making it possible to walk over to Skansen while taking in the fantastic views of the waterfront along the way.

Skansen was founded in 1891 by Artur Hazelius during a time of rapid industrialisation and change across not only Sweden but throughout Europe. He shared the fear of many that Sweden’s traditional customs and occupations may be lost forever, so after founding the Nordic Museum on Djurgården Island, he decided to initiate an open-air model that would preserve this rich history for future generations.
