Old Jaffa District is one of Tel-Aviv’s oldest parts, blessed with a rich history that includes biblical and mythological stories, as well as the Medieval, Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Possessing a distinctly Arabic atmosphere, this ancient district is packed with cafes and restaurants that sit within a network of enticing alleyways.
Things to do in Old Jaffa
The jewel in the crown of the Old Jaffa District is the ancient port. More than 3,000 years old, it continues to function as a fishing port, however, today the area’s main function is as a place of leisure and relaxation. Featuring a beautifully renovated waterfront as well as the unmissable St.Peter’s Church, Old Jaffa’s port is an idyllic area where you can enjoy a fresh seafood lunch.
Perhaps just as famous as Jaffa’s port is the district’s flea market. Located near the famous clock tower, this Aladdin’s cave of second-hand goodies is a fantastic place to while away an afternoon and soak up the vibrant ambience. Open from Sunday to Friday, the network of covered alleyways and paths are home to every item you could imagine, from vintage typewriters to hand-crafted kitchenware and second-hand furniture.
Looking for some local cuisine? Old Jaffa District is home to some truly stellar dining options. The most famous is Abouelafia and Sons, one of Israel’s most renowned bakeries where excited customers line-up for their chance to taste the legendary pastries, confectionaries and shawarma.
