Centrally located, the neighbourhood of Chatuchak is one of Bangkok’s most visited districts. While the area contains a large park, children’s museum, and Cineplex, the district’s greatest claim to fame is its renowned Weekend Market, the largest in Thailand.
With over 8,000 stalls in 27 sections, it takes a full day to explore the Chatuchak Weekend Market thoroughly. Its vendors seemingly carry everything under the sun with huge swaths of the 27-acre area devoted to handicrafts, clothing, antiques, food and drink, housewares, plants, and even pets.
Visitors can take exit 1 from the Mo Chit subway stop on the BTS Sukhumvit line, exit 1 from the Chatuchak Park Metro station, or exits 1 and 2 from the Kamphaeng Phet Metro station. While Chatuchak Market has been open for over 60 years, it was not always located in Chatuchak. The Bangkok government opened a market at Sanam Luang, upon the prime minister’s requirement that every province in Thailand has its own market. The location moved to Chatuchak in the early 1980s, prompting the name change.
