Rising out of the blue depths of the Atlantic Ocean, Block Island offers a unique getaway destination with over 27 kilometres of idyllic beaches, private coves and a national wildlife reserve. The main township provides access to family-friendly entertainment, inviting restaurants and cultural attractions, while the rest of the island is perfect for coastal hikes and wildlife spotting.
Things to do in Block Island
Block Island’s New Shoreham township is a great place to experience local culture, particularly along the main strip of Water Street. Here you’ll find ice cream parlours, moped rentals, beach fashion stores and seafood restaurants. Check out the Old Harbor Historic District, home to 42 protected buildings from the mid-1800s, including hotels, churches and the iconic Empire Theatre, which still shows films and live acts.
With over 27 kilometres of sandy coastline, finding a spot to relax on the beach is easy. Crescent Beach is one of the most popular, usually populated with families enjoying the calm water. Stroll along Corn Neck Road to choose from five smaller beaches, including the aptly-named Surf Beach and Mansion Beach.
Are you looking for some well-earned rest and rejuvenation? Book a signature treatment at one of Block Island’s pampering day spas, such as Koru Eco Spa. If you prefer to get out and about, organise a parasailing or surfing experience. You can also rent sailing boats, embark on a horse riding excursion, go birdwatching or cast a line out during a deep-sea fishing charter.
Art lovers shouldn’t miss exploring the local galleries, such as Jessie Edwards Studio, Spring Street Gallery and Photo Dog Art Gallery. All three offer unique artwork by talented artists, including pottery, jewellery and photography.
