The city of Suncheon, close by to the beautiful Suncheon Bay, offers a wealth of cultural attractions including many ancient temples and castles. Known as an eco-city filled with many scenic parks and natural areas, Suncheon also benefits from its position next to the wetlands of Suncheon Bay and its teeming wildlife.
Suncheon is a richly historic city that is home to many unique heritage sites and buildings. Some of the many old temples in the city are excellent sightseeing spots including Songgwangsa Temple, known as one of the Three Jewel Temples of Korea. Nagan Castle, known locally as Naganeupseong, is also a popular attraction in the region as the only Joseon Dynasty castle still standing in the South Jeolla Province. Within the old town of Suncheon, there are many things to do including a visit to the Suncheon National University Museum and the many interesting old buildings on Maesan Road.
The nearest airport to the city of Suncheon is Yeosu Airport, which is roughly a 40-minute journey away. Yeosu Airport only operates two routes to Jeju International Airport and Gimpo International Airport in Seoul. Alternatively, Suncheon is also within reasonable travelling distance to Sacheon Airport, around 76 kilometres from the city, and Gwangju Airport with is roughly 100 kilometres away. Many of South Korea’s intercity express buses run to Suncheon including a service from Seoul which takes just under 4 hours. Within Suncheon multiple city bus services can take travellers to various points in the city.
Suncheon enjoy a global reputation as a leading eco-city for its dedication to preserving the area’s ecological system and hosted the 2013 Suncheon Garden Expo Korea. The large Suncheon Open Film Set in the city has over 200 buildings which represent different eras of Korean history and has been the location of hundreds of TV shows and movies in South Korea.
