Stansted Mountfitchet is a chocolate-box village filled with half-timbered houses. Many of the historic buildings house inviting pubs that have been pouring pints for hundreds of years. Sit down for a traditional pub meal and soak in the old-world charm.
Step back in time and discover more than 900 years of history at Mountfitchet Castle. The ancient Norman fortress has been given new life as an open-air museum. Walk around the wooden keep, peer into thatch-roof buildings and enjoy refreshments at the tearoom. Tame Fallow deer roam the grounds and will happily eat from your hands. Within the grounds is the nostalgia-soaked House on the Hill Museum, where you can view thousands of children’s toys dating back to the Victorian era.
Hatfield Forest is a stone’s throw from the village and protects more than 160 hectares of ancient woodland. It was once used as a hunting forest by Norman kings and is a great place to walk, cycle and rent rowboats.
