About Prague Castle

Prague Castle dominates the capital city of the Czech Republic.Saturated in history, its stories date back hundreds of years and it is a key cultural landmark of Europe. The largest castle complex in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the castle shows the movements of Prague through the ages, from Romanesque architecture to Gothic style to modern reconstructions. Prague Castle is also the official residence of the President as it has traditionally been a seat of power since the kings of Bohemia inhabited it, whose jewels remain hidden inside the grounds.

The key appeal of Prague Castle is its size, taking up the same space of seven football fields with many gardens and alleyways to explore. There are plenty of churches to explore, as the St. Vitus Cathedral offers visitors a glimpse of artistic stained glass windows and the tomb of St John of Nepomuk. Another main attraction is the fourth oldest crown jewels in Europe, the Czech Crown Jewels, created in 1347. The smaller, less regal attractions of Prague Castle are just as charming, including the Old Royal Palace, and one of its original sections, the Golden Lane, where common people lived in quaint and now preserved narrow streets.

Prague Castle is well-connected to the rest of the city with most visitors using the number 22 tram line and departing at Pražský Hrad, only a 5-minute walk to one of the castle’s courtyards. Another option is to walk down the hill from Pohořelec, also on tram line 22, providing visitors a gentle stroll and pleasant view over the castle. For a more challenging route, but better view, visitors can exit at Malostranské náměstí station and climb the New Castle Stairs to the entrance called the Gate of Giants.

Founded in the 9th century by the Premyslid Dynasty, the Prague Castle has a long history of construction. Many additions of new palaces and buildings and reconstructions have created the range of architectural styles seen today. With extensive renovations over time, construction was first initiated a hundred years ago by Josip Plečnik, a famous Slovenian architect, further expanding the 70,000 square metres of Prague Castle complex. Orientated around ancient courtyards and dominating the capital city of Prague, the history of this castle is best experienced by personally exploring the streets, alleys, churches and palaces that define it.
