About Humayun's Tomb

More of a palace than a tomb, a place of luxury and architectural wonder, Humayun’s Tomb is a whole complex surrounding the burial site of the former Mughal Emperor, located in the east of India’s capital territory, Delhi. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and significant tourist attraction, reflecting the heritage and historical culture of the country in the way of aesthetic magnificence. Lying on the banks of the Yamuna River, the site of Humayun’s Tomb comprises of the burial spot itself, the graves of his family and the elaborate buildings and grounds that surround it, architecturally renowned for their innovative design and construction from red sandstone.

In addition to the tomb itself, visitors can explore the Char Bagh, the Four Gardens, which surround the site, laid out in a Persian style in a strict geometrical pattern divided into four different squares, where visitors can navigate through stone pathways. The high walls of the complex are also to be admired, old and rugged, which surround squares, gardens, large rooms and pavilions, as well as an ancient bath chamber. Other landmarks lead to Humayun’s Tomb, including the tomb and mosque of Isa Khan, the oldest but less famous of the two, shaped like an octagon to the east of a wide sandstone mosque, and other tombs, stables and residences. One mystery of the site is the tomb of Barber, which historians assume by its location, size and proximity to the main tomb, is a significant burial site, although there is no inscription indicating the identity of the buried person.

International visitors can reach Humayun’s Tomb by flying into the local airport, Indira Gandhi International, which acts as the main transport hub of Delhi and also provides direct taxi and coach transfers into the city. Train services are also available from the city and visitors can find Humayun’s Tomb using local transport systems like buses, metro and taxi.

The body of Humayun was not immediately placed in its current tomb after his death on 20th January 1556.Instead, his wife and chief consort ordered the construction of a new burial site, completed 16 years after his death. Designed by a Persian architect, the tomb was constructed by the vision of Humayun’s wife, who grieved by her husband’s death and made it her life’s purpose to create the most magnificent and affluent tomb in his memory.
