Translating to “City of Water”, Chonburi overlooks the Gulf of Thailand to the south-east of Bangkok. It’s known for its beach resorts, traditional temples and bustling night markets, as well as an impressive zoo offering after-dark experiences.

A short drive south of Chonburi takes you to Bangsaen and its popular Walking Street, which hosts a night market on Friday and Saturday. Soak up the vibrant atmosphere and live music as you browse stalls selling clothing, homewares, antiques and authentic Thai food.
Spend a day in Pattaya City, a lively beach resort overlooking the Gulf of Thailand. Explore the temple of Wat Phra Yai, famed for its immense golden Buddha, and relax on the shores of Pattaya Beach, then head out after dark to experience the city’s legendary nightlife.
Just south of Pattaya City is Wat Yansangwararam, a vast temple complex with Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Lanna Thai and Swiss architecture. Admire the soaring white chedi and Chinese artefacts at the Viharn Sien temple, then wander through picturesque grounds with views of the golden Buddha Mountain.
Travelling with kids? Visit the Khao Kheow Open Zoo, home to more than 300 different animal species. In addition to its walk-through aviary and interactive deer park, the zoo is famed for its night safari where guests can experience the nocturnal activities and calls of African wildlife.
Chonburi is just over one hour’s drive south of Bangkok and slightly closer to Suvarnabhumi Airport. Songthaews and motorcycle taxis travel throughout Chonburi.
