Overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea to the south of Naples, Acciaroli is a coastal hamlet famed for its unusually high number of centenarians. It was a favourite getaway of Ernest Hemingway, with beautiful beaches, mountainous hiking trails and ancient Greek settlements on its doorstep.
Spend your days relaxing on the Spiaggia Grande di Acciaroli, which stretches to the north of the town. Beach umbrellas and sun loungers are available for rent and you can dine on gourmet Italian cuisine overlooking the sand at Ristorante Mediterraneo. On the other side of Acciaroli is the smaller Spiaggia del Porto, which is nestled just behind the port.
Acciaroli forms part of Parco Nazionale del Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed area that encompasses the surrounding coastline and rugged interior. Marvel at the ancient Greek temples of Paestum and explore the remains of Velia, once home to the philosopher Parmenides.
Getting there
Acciaroli is 1.5 hours’ drive from Salerno and two hours from Naples International Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Buses connect from towns along the Cilento coast to Acciaroli while the hamlet is small enough to explore on foot.
