Forming part of the Algarve’s Golden Triangle, Vilamoura is an upmarket coastal resort that boasts one of the finest beaches in the region. It’s a popular destination amongst golfers thanks to its five golf courses and centres Portugal’s largest marina, which has the capacity to berth over 1,000 vessels.
Kick back beneath the red cliffs of Praia da Falesia, a stunning stretch of sand that extends for five kilometres west of Vilamoura’s marina. Praia de Vilamoura lies on the other side and connects to the charming fishing harbour in neighbouring Quarteira. Locally-caught seafood can be enjoyed at one of the eateries along the village’s palm-lined promenade.
History buffs shouldn’t miss a visit to the Cerro da Vila, an archaeological museum that encompasses the remains of a Roman villa. It was once an important place for producing a fish paste known locally as “garum”. Wander between its ruined bathhouses, necropolis and fish salting stations while admiring the mosaic pavements, marble friezes and stucco wall paintings.
Vilamoura is 30 minutes’ drive from Faro and Faro Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe. Buses are the main means of getting to and around Vilamoura.
