Where to stay in Sanxia District

About Sanxia District

Sanxia District takes you beyond the bustling streets of Taipei and showcases Taiwan through a local lens. It’s set at the base of forested mountains and promises history, culture and beautiful mountain scenery. Visit one of the finest Chinese temples in Taiwan, stroll along a beautifully preserved historic street and explore the picturesque Dongyanshan National Forest Recreation Area.

Things to do

Qingshui Zushi Temple is one of the finest examples of traditional Chinese architecture in Taiwan. The ancient Taoist temple is dedicated to a Song Dynasty monk and is decorated with intricate wood carvings and brightly coloured artwork.

Also known as Sanxia Old Street, Minquan Street stretches for around 200 metres and is lined with beautifully restored historic houses that were once owned by Chinese merchants. It’s like stepping back in time and you’ll be awed by the handsome red brick facades and intricate wood carvings. Each shop is inscribed with Chinese characters showing the name of the merchant that once operated from the premises.

Dongyanshan National Forest Recreation Area is set on the southern border of Sanxia District and immerses you in the pristine Taiwanese wilderness. Scenic trails wind through the mountains and take you to tumbling waterfalls and sun-dappled cedar forests. Hiking to the summit of 1,200-metre-high Dongyanshan Mountain offers sweeping views over the countryside.

Sanxia District is dotted with street food vendors selling delicious Taiwanese snacks. Sample specialties like scallion pancakes, “stinky” tofu and noodles topped with miso dressing.
