Where to stay in Maastricht

About Maastricht

Located at the southernmost tip of the Netherlands, Maastricht is a vibrant university city that’s clustered with medieval architecture. Home to one of Holland’s oldest stone bridges, it centres around an atmospheric square and its Gothic basilica.

Things to do

Wander around the picturesque square of Het Vrijthof, which is dominated by the grand Basilica of Saint Servatius, an Armenian missionary who died in Maastricht in 384. Marvel at its Romanesque, Baroque and Gothic architecture, visit the Treasury where Saint Servatius’ relics are displayed, then dine at one of the square’s alfresco cafes.

Stroll along the 13th-century stone bridge of Sint-Servaasbrug, thought to be the oldest bridge in Holland. It spans the Meuse River, connecting the old city and the artistic neighbourhood of Wyck, and is a picturesque spot to watch the pleasure boats cruising below.

Admire 16th and 17th-century Flemish paintings at the Bonnefantenmuseum, which showcases notable works by Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens. It also features an impressive collection of medieval sculptures and contemporary works, together with 17th and 18th-century Maastricht silver.

On the outskirts of Maastricht are the Saint Pietersberg Caves where thousands of passages have been carved over centuries into the limestone. Guided tours offer fascinating insight into the history of the caves, highlighting Napoleon’s visit, their use as a refuge for Jewish people during World War II and their use as a shelter during sieges and bombings.

Getting around

Maastricht Aachen Airport is 15 minutes’ drive north of the city and regular trains make the 2.5-hour journey from Maastricht to Amsterdam. Maastricht is a picturesque city to explore on foot or bicycle.
