One of the world’s top cities of science and research, Daejeon exudes an uber-modern vibe with futuristic architecture, department stores and innovative museums. Tradition still flows throughout this city, from local markets and street-food stalls to a prehistoric excavation site and natural marvels.

Things to do

Hand’s on learning is found at the National Science Museum, which boasts a planetarium and interactive exhibits focused on technology, science and natural history. The entire family will love Expo Science Park, which is home to 30 themed gardens, an observation area, amusement rides and the Daejeon Museum of Art.

If you love an active holiday, head out along the Gyejoksan Hwangtogil Trail, a 14.5-kilometre-long red-clay road that runs through the lush Jang-dong Recreational Forest. There are also two mountains just outside the city, Gyeryongsan and Daedunsan, which are great for an outdoor adventure. You can hike to the summits for panoramic countryside views while spotting native deer, birds, hedgehogs and squirrels along the way.

Interested in culture? Stroll down Uineungjeongi Cultural Street, home to over 150 shops, galleries, theatres and museums showcasing local art and cultural achievements. Save some time to unwind at Yuseong Hot Spring, which has attracted kings and presidents with its healing waters, from foot baths to steam baths and whole-body immersion.

Fascinating souvenirs can be pick up from the market stalls around Daejeon Station, where you can also find street-food vendors serving Korenodeng (meat sticks) and topokki (spicy rice cake). You’ll also find numerous international restaurants, such as Italian-style steaks at Flying Pan, American eats at TGI Fridays and farm-fresh vegan meals at Marchera Wellbeing Cafe.

Getting around

Daejeon has regular city buses, including express services and suburban lines, along with a metro. You can also catch one of the numerous taxis or take advantage of the public bikes to ride around town.
