Things to do

Don’t miss seeing Sri Veeranarayana Temple, which was built in 1104 AD and is one of the most revered shrines devoted to an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. You can view the shrines while admiring intricate carvings covering more than 30 bays. Amrutesvara Temple showcases the Hoysala architectural style with massive towers and a spacious open mandapa porch.

Spend a day trekking to Hebbe Falls, a magnificent feat of nature spilling into a serene mountain lake amidst pristine forests and coffee plantations. You can take a dip in herb-infused waters, which are believed to have healing properties. For longer hikes and multiple trails, make your way to Kalhatti Falls.

Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary offers a chance to explore landscapes inhabited by wild tigers. Take a jeep safari to spot the magnificent tigers on graceful romps through natural habitats. The sanctuary is also a haven for various bird species, marsh crocodiles and deciduous trees.

The Bhadra River flows outside Chikmagalur, providing thrilling river rafting excursions with trained guides. If you’re looking for something more laid-back, play a round at one of the golf centres nearby, such as Chikmagalur Golf Course and Bangalore Club.

Getting around

If arriving at Mangalore International Airport, you can rent a car for the 150-kilometre drive to Chikmagalur. You can also take a bus from the airport and then use taxis, auto rickshaws or city buses to get around. Bicycle and motorbike rentals are also available.
