About Casa Rosada

The executive mansion and office of the President of Argentina, Casa Rosada dominates the eastern end of Plaza de Mayo. It is a dedicated National Historic Monument of Argentina and one of its most iconic buildings, housing a museum which showcases items relating to the country’s former presidents.

The building was enlisted as the Presidential offices by Bartolome Mitre during his 1860s rule, but it was his successor, Domingo Sarmiento, who was responsible for the pink colour of Casa Rosada. It was reportedly chosen to defuse tensions between the two opposing political parties by mixing the red colour of the Federales with the white of the Unitarians. Sarmiento also commissioned Swedish-Argentine architect Carl Kihlberg to construct the Central Post Office next door in 1873, with President Julio Roca later building a more elaborate State House a decade later. These two buildings were integrated by architect Francesco Tamburini’s iconic Italianate archway in 1884. Casa Rosada includes the Hall of Busts where the Presidents of Argentina have been honoured by artists from around the world, as well as the Seat of Rivadavia which pays homage to the first president of Argentina. Since 1957, a museum has been open to the public at Casa Rosada, displaying a range of presidential memorabilia including belongings, furniture, books and carriages and incorporating the excavated ruins of the fort which once stood here.

Casa Rosada is easily accessed from the Plaza de Mayo metro station on its southern edge, as well as by buses which stop around this prominent public space. It’s within easy walking distance of the Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires, the whitewashed Parroquia San Ignacio de Loyola and the Historical Complex Cultural Manzana de las Luces.

This site on which Casa Rosada now lies was originally occupied by the Fort of Juan Baltazar of Austria, built in 1594 on the shores of the Rio de la Plata. It was replaced by the Castle of San Miguel in 1713 which served as the hub for the colonial government, before being demolished in 1857 to build the Italianate building seen today.
