The Rahmi Koc Museum offers a window into Balikesir's colourful past. Housed in a beautifully restored Greek church, it showcases nautical memorabilia and Ottoman antiques. After touring the museum, enjoy refreshments at the atmospheric on-site cafe.
Balikesir is studded with underground springs known for their therapeutic properties. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy a soak in the historical "Pasha Hamami" Turkish bath. It's still located in the original stone building anchored by a spacious central pool.
Head north and you'll hit Lake Manyas, Turkey's first bird sanctuary. The lush wetlands are home to an incredible variety of species, including Dalmatian pelicans, cormorants and herons.
Getting around Balikesir
Balikesir is small and best explored on foot, while local buses and taxis are also available. Edremit Körfez Airport is 100 kilometres from Balikesir. Buses depart from the main "otogar" station, a 15-minute drive from the city centre.
