Swap volcanoes for cacti in The Cactus Garden, which houses over 1,000 cactus species in a former quarry. You can wander through the garden before grabbing a drink or light bite at the on-site cafe. Finally, tick off Cueva de Los Verdes, a fascination lava tube with underground volcanic passageways, colourful caves and a natural concert hall where you can watch live music.

You can also ride ponies, tour a gold mine and let the kids run wild in the splash zone. Keen scuba divers shouldn’t miss the one-of-a-kind Museo Atlántico, where you must dive 12 metres below the surface to see artificial reefs and numerous sculptures made by local artists. Find your own slice of paradise at Papagayo Beach, which boasts a landscape of white sand and turquoise water.

Getting around

Lanzarote is easily reached by flying into Lanzarote Airport, which is 20 minutes from the island’s main commercial centre. Car hire is one of the best ways to get around, along with taxis and public buses.
