Just 10 kilometres from the town centre, Frithsden Vineyard has been producing cool-climate wines since 1971. St Albans Cathedral has been towering over Hertfordshire since 793 when it was raised by King Offa of Mercia. Inside you can gaze up at Britain's longest medieval nave, which is adorned with ornate ceiling carvings and 13th-century paintings.

Head north-east and you'll hit Knebworth House, a magnificent Tudor mansion once owned by illustrious Victorian novelist, Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Botanists will love strolling around the beautifully manicured English gardens, while kids can explore the Dinosaur Trail. In the summer, Knebworth House hosts popular rock concerts.

Stretch your legs in Aldenham Country Park, a picturesque slice of the Hertfordshire countryside. It covers 40 hectares and is filled with shimmering lakes and emerald woodlands. There's a family-friendly farm to explore, which offers kids the chance to ride ponies and bottle feed lambs.

Getting around

The Hemel Hempstead town centre is easy to get around on foot. It's serviced by its own train station, with connections to London in 30 minutes. Local buses run to nearby towns and villages like St Albans. Rental cars let you explore Hertfordshire at your own pace.
