Where to stay in Albany

About Albany

Albany is a vibrant suburb located 15 kilometres north-west of Auckland, New Zealand. The suburb is well-known to locals as a popular retail zone with an extensive array of shops, movie theatres, upscale restaurants and an indoor ski centre nearby.

Visitors to Albany will enjoy the incredible shopping experiences it offers. Westfield Albany, one of the main retail hubs, is the second largest shopping complex in New Zealand. With over 150 specialty stores, a multiplex cinema and a 560 seat food court, it’s the ideal place to pick up a bargain. For those who prefer a more authentic shopping experience, the local farmers’ market offers an array of fresh produce and local fare. Alternatively, nearby Silverdale Market is a haven for local jewellery, handicrafts and baked goods. Families will enjoy a trip to Snowplanet also in nearby Silverdale. This indoor ski resort with tobogganing, skiing and snowboarding is the ideal place for seasoned winter sports enthusiasts or beginners. Visitors of all ages can glide down the 200-metre long slope, or simply observe the activities from the comfort of the restaurant and bar. Albany is home to North Harbour Stadium where sports fans can enjoy spectating a game of rugby or soccer. Visitors will be delighted with the fantastic dining options available in Albany. From gastropubs to seafood restaurants, whole food or Asian eateries, there’s something to tempt all taste buds. The suburb is 6 kilometres from beautiful coastal areas and beaches of Murrays Bay, Browns Bay and Mairangi Bay. Travellers who prefer relaxing days by the beach can choose from several and enjoy the picturesque views, lapping waves and picnic areas.

It’s easy to reach Albany and just 15 minutes’ drive north of Auckland Central Business District. There are several public buses which operate from central Auckland. Taxis are also readily available. From Albany centre, public buses transport visitors to Westfield Shopping Mall. Alternatively, it’s easy to walk to the shopping complex in just over 15 minutes. Regular buses run from near North Albany Expressway to the beaches.

The suburb was known by the Maori people as “Place of Rainbows”. The town was also referred to as Lucas Creek, before it was renamed after Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany. Although Albany is a suburb of Auckland, it has an independent town feel to it. Many surrounding areas are still semi-rural making for a more peaceful retreat away from the main city. The wonderful shopping facilities, restaurant options and local markets attract visitors and locals from all over the region.
