Overlooking the northeastern end of Jølstravatnet, Skei is a lakeside village in the heart of Sogn og Fjordane. It’s backed by the dramatic landscapes and glaciers of Jostedalsbreen National Park while having close ties to one of Norway’s most-loved Naïve artists.
A short drive from Skei is the former home of Nikolai Astrup, who famously painted scenes of rural Norway. Nestled in idyllic surroundings, the property has been transformed into the Astruptunet museum where you can see the artist’s paintings, sketches and lithographs while learning about his life.
At the other end of Jølstravatnet from Skei is the Jølstramuseet, which comprises a series of historic houses and displays of vintage tools once used by the local farmers. Changing art exhibitions are regularly held in the barn gallery and the on-site restaurant serves modern Norwegian fare using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients.
Getting there
Skei is around an hour’s drive from Førde Airport or around the same distance from the much-larger Bergen Airport. Buses connect Skei to towns and villages across the region while having your own vehicle gives you greater freedom to get around. The centre of Skei is compact enough to explore on foot.
