From Kassel, it’s a short drive to the World Heritage-listed Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, a sprawling landscaped park with most of the city’s historical attractions. Visit the medieval-style Löwenburg castle to see Baroque living quarters and 18th-century fortifications. Don’t miss the iconic Hercules monument, a copper statue of the ancient Greek demigod.

Are you interested in art? Visit the Fridericianum, one of the oldest public museums in Europe. It showcases temporary art exhibits by contemporary artists from around the world. You can also admire artwork dating as far back as the Paleolithic Age in the Hessian State Museum or see modern paintings in the New Gallery.

Kassel’s city centre is lined shopping and dining strips where you can duck into a German pub or dine at Chinese or Thai restaurants. Learn about two of Kassel’s favourite sons, the Brothers Grimm, at the GRIMMWELT Kassel, where you can see drawings depicting some of the writers’ best stories. Afterwards, stroll through the riverfront Karlsaue Park while admiring the manicured gardens, public sculptures and tranquil central pond.

Getting around

Kassel is a 25-minute drive from Kassel Calden Airport, which has limited international flights. The city also has two train stations on Germany’s national rail network. It’s easy to get around Kassel using the tram lines, light rail train, public buses or taxis.
