If you’re a train enthusiast, stop by the Bush Tramway Club, which regularly operates restored locomotives along the 5.4-kilometre stretch of Rotowaro-Glen Afton. You can jump aboard the steam and diesel trains for an adventure or admire the collection of industrial railway items.

Looking for an outdoor excursion? Hike the scenic Hakarimata Walkway past beautiful kauri trees, streams and cascading waterfalls. It’s become a popular fitness activity due to its “never-ending stairway” to the summit, where you can enjoy excellent views towards the coast and across the Waikato Basin.

Take the kids to the picturesque Lake Hakanoa for a family day out. You can traverse the flat walking trail through a native tree reserve and explore a contemporary Maori garden, then stop for a leisurely picnic.

Getting around

Huntly is 95 kilometers from Auckland International Airport and 30 minutes’ drive from Hamilton. There are daily bus services from Auckland and Tauranga, while a car offers the most flexibility. The city center is easily explored on foot, while bike hire, buses, and taxis are also available.
