Where to stay in Fresno

About Fresno

Nestled in the San Joaquin Valley, Fresno is an artistic city on the doorstep of some of California’s most spectacular landscapes. It serves as the gateway to the rock formations of Yosemite and the giant trees of Sequoia National Park, as well as the dramatic scenery of Kings Canyon National Park.

Things to do

Wander amidst the stone-built walls and vaults in the Forestiere Underground Gardens, which were created by Sicilian immigrant Baldassare Forestiere during the early-20th century. It features a number of passages inspired by the Roman catacombs, together with subterranean rooms and landscaped courtyards filled with fruit trees and vines.

Visit the Fresno Art Museum to admire its impressive collection of Mexican art spanning pre-Columbian times to the modern era. Contemporary works by local artists are also on display, together with revolving exhibitions that explore the art and cultural traditions of diverse global ethnic groups.

Fresno is home to a number of farmer’s markets, but the most extensive is the Vineyard Farmer’s Market held beneath a beautiful arbour to the north of the downtown area. Fresh fruit, vegetables and local honey are for sale, as well as artisan cheese, preserves and ready-to-go snacks.

Fresno makes a great base for exploring the giant forests and immense General Sherman Tree of Sequoia National Park. Head underground to witness the streams and rock formations of the Crystal Cave or soak up the sweeping panoramas from the granite peak of Moro Rock.

Getting around

Fresno/Yosemite International Airport is located around 10 minutes’ drive from the city centre and there are trains and buses that connect to destinations across California. Fresno offers numerous bicycle lanes and many of the downtown sights are within easy walking distance of each other.
