Backed by the rugged peaks of the Dolomites, Falcade is a charming mountain town in the Italian region of Veneto. It lies near the Trevalli Ski Area, which provides a setting for skiing and snowboarding in the winter months before becoming a hiking and mountain biking paradise in the summer. Falcade was the birthplace of the Italian skier Angelo Genuin, who competed in the 1964 Winter Olympics.
Things to do in Falcade
Falcade’s main house of worship is the Church of the Blessed Virgin Immaculate, which was completed in 1946 on the designs of Father Rodolfo Gennari and Achille Vettorazzo of Treviso. Marvel at the large pilasters that dominate the exterior before stepping inside to see the column-supported arches. The church houses several valuable works of art, including Augusto Murer’s “Via Crucis” and a bas-relief by Dante Moro.
If you’re visiting in the winter months, you can hit the powder with the experienced team at the Falcade Ski & Snowboard School. Learn the basics of skiing during a group lesson or hone your snowboarding skills with a one-on-one session. Lessons are also available at the Col Margherita Freeride Park, which is the only authorised freeride area in the Dolomites.
Once the snow melts, you can explore along the Sentiero Geologico di Falcade, which follows the route of the Gavon Stream. Information panels offer insight into the Dolomites’ geological past and the phenomena that gave rise to its majestic mountains. Along the way, you’ll encounter the picturesque Cascate di Barezze, which tumbles 10 metres into a small pool below.
Getting around Falcade
Falcade is around 1.5 hours’ drive from Bolzano and Bolzano Airport, which has seasonal flights to destinations across Europe. Buses connect to Falcade, although renting a car is a more convenient way of getting around the region.
