I'M A WIDOWER TRAVELLING ALONE.I HAD JUST ABOUT GIVEN UP ON CANCUN AND THE MEXICAN RIVIERA.I HAVE BEEN THERE AT LEAST 30 TIMES I HAVE STAYED AT ALOT OF THE RESORTS,BUT EACH TIME I WENT THE SERVICE,MAINTAINANCE(ESPECIALLY THE MAINTAINANCE),FOOD AT THE BUFFETS HAD SLIPPED ANOTHE NOTCH.I HAPPENED UPON THE ESMARELDA ON THE INTERNET AND DECIDED TO TRY IT,SINCE I WAS GOING TO CANCUN ANYWAY. I WAS SO PLEASED AT WHAT I FOUND.I STAYED FOR 10 NIGHTS.THE SERVICE WAS GREAT ,VERY RESPONSIVE ANDALWAYS WITH A SMILE.THE ALA CARTE RESTAURANTS WERE TRUELY GREAT.THEY FIGURED OUT RIGHT AWAY THAT I WAS ALONE AND WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY TO ACCOMADATE ME.THEY SERVED ME AT THE ALA CARTES WITHOUT A RESERVATION ,AS LONG AS THEY HAD ROOM. MY ROOM WAS IMPECABLY CLEANED EVERY DAY. SINCE I DONT DRINK,BUT DO TAKE A LOT OF MADICATIONS THAT REQUIRE MIXIG WITH WATER ,I ASKED THEM NOT TO LEAVE BEER AND LEAVE EXTRA WATER.IT WAS THERE EVERY DAY.GREAT POOLS,BEAUTIFUL HUGE GROUNDS,NOT LOUD BUT NOT SEDATE.I HAD A GREAT TIME.IN FACT I'M IN THE PROCESS OF MAKING A RESERVATION FOR NOVEMBER.

Overall I would rate this hotel a 3 at best. My husband and I had booked this vacation for our honeymoon. When we arrived to our room we had expected a King size bed since that is what we booked. Instead we had gotten 2 double (full size) beds. (So not romantic for a honeymoon.) We contacted the concierge to see if we can get moved but we were told that all the rooms were booked for the night and to check back in the morning. The next morning we called again and were told the same thing. Towards the end of the trip we finally went down to the lobby to complain since we booked a king size bed. They told us that when you book with the hotel your reservation only guarantees you a room not the kind of beds you will get. By the last day we were there we were finally able to get a room with a king size bed but we had to upgrade to a suite which cost us an exrtra * with a jacuzzi in the patio. We were very disappointed since the jacuzzi was filthy. You have to have a reservation for all the dinners so the first night you're screwed since tthey are all booked up. You basically have to book your reservation the day before. All the photos of the hotel is true to life except the beach is not clear like the photos. The beach water is brown from all the seaweed. We ended up taking a taxi to Playa Mamitas to see a beach with clear water.

We just returned from a trip to the Blue Bay Esmerelda. It was by far the worst experience in Mexico that we have had. The food wasn't all that great, and you have to make reservations for everything except the sub par buffet. The wait-staff was very polite, however the general customer service was not. Our keys did not work and it is so spread out that you do A LOT of walking just to get from the beach to the front desk. It is about 6 miles from Playa and with all the military check points at this time it took over 20 minutes to get there. The beach was very disapointing and the entertainment was not entertaining...at all. We recommend one of the RIU hotels closer to the town of Playa. I can promise you if you stay here, you will regret it. Also, this place does not have a "swim-up bar"...if that's something that you are looking for. We would never recommend this hotel to any of our friends or family.

We stayed at the Blue Bay in January '09 and hate to say I was very disappointed with this hotel. The staff was very nice, but too laid back. The hotel is very large and you need them to pick you up in small golf carts to get around, which they claim come around every 15 minutes. One night for dinner we waited 35 minutes for a cart to come, and ended up walking to eat, which is about a 12 minute walk if your room is near the pool. The rooms are nice, very clean, but you can hear EVERYTHING going on in the hallways. Lots of families and children in the hotel, so a crying baby at 3:00 AM will be heard by the entire floor. Try to book all tours on the first day, the hotel will not book anything for you same day, it must be at least the day before. Be careful with the meat, they picked up the raw meat with the same tongs used to place the cooked burgers on your plate. I couldn't eat meat the rest of the trip, and spoke with numerous people about how sick they were. Also, they charge you a delivery fee of $13USD for room service which I thought was a real turn off for an all inclusive hotel, and they won't put alcohol in the mini bar, only beer. As for the beach, you need to walk about 30 feet out before it becomes a clear blue color. They stated that the water was muddy because of the time of year. The pool is nice, lots of chairs so it’s easy to find a spot. I would have to agree with the other review is saying this hotel is a 6 out of 10.

I'd give the entire experience a 6 out of 10. We arrived at 11pm and there was one restaraunt open with two options for food: nachos or a cheeseburger. The salad bar was fastfood restaraunt style. Our room was nice. We made two requests at the time of booking: a room close to the beach and pool and a king size bed. We got our king size bed, but were located as far away from the beach and pool as possible. We were given a "garden view" which was justifyed by a couple of plants surrounding a nuclear looking utility box. Our room was on the main path so everyone could see right in our room unless we had the blinds closed. We were right beside the elevator and ice machine so you can imagine the noise. Once, at 4am we heard the sound of pounding Mexican techno music and it was coming from the emlployee golf cart patrolling the grounds. My fiance went out there and turned it off himself he was so pissed off. Bring earplugs if you plan on staying here! The staff was pretty rude overall. It seemed as though they all had the "we know you already paid and we have your money so I don't give a crap" mixed with "stupid tourist" mentality. Of course there were some amazing staff but we weren't that happy with how they delt with things. (or rather didn't) Entertainment was terrible. Amatures wearing bunk costumes with mindless easy routines. One thing I would recommend is participating in the time shar presentation by Blue Bay. It takes 90 minutes and if you are married, you get a $100 GC that you can use at the hotel. We spent the day at the Spa.

We arrived 12/25/08 for 7 days. Had never stayed at an all-inclusive, but with 2 college age kids, will only do again in the future. Resort is absolutely beautiful! Grounds and shops are extremely well kept. We had 2 rooms in building closest to main pool and beach(gorgeous and 5 steps from pool). Spent every day at pool and loved it...clean, huge, plenty of lounge chairs even at high vacation time. Lots of activities daily and nightly, and they always had a grill going at lunch next to pool for burgers, dogs, and drinks. The food was VERY good..our only disappointment was the sit-down Italian. The rest of the sit downs were very good considering this is an all-inc. The bfast, lunch, and dinner buffets always had lots of options(fresh cerviche, chips, guacamole, and other home mades) including cooked to order omlet, egg, and pasta bars. Always bottled water and drinks/beer in rooms. Only negative was very loud hallways and maid carts. Already looking to book for Xmas 2009.

We are a young couple and we came to this resort for a wedding. We absolutely loved it and came back for our anniversary (Nov 10) two years in a row. Previously, we went to Hawaii two years in a row, and living on the East Coast, I can hardly make the case for going to Hawaii instead of Playa. The staff provided absolutely outstandign service and must be the nicest people in the world, we got an upgrade on our room and we received a free lobster dinner for two as a thank you for returning to the resort. The beach is gorgeous, the food is very good and water safe. My new found paradise. You will not get better value for the money.

My husband and I stayed here in Sept. and are still talking about what a terrible place this was . We requested a room as close to the lobby as possible with a king size bed and on the first floor. We got a room as far away from the lobby as possible with two double beds and the air conditioning wasn't working. Our check in was late so we had to wait until our luggage arrived before we could go to bed. I had to make two separate calls looking for our thngs and finally at 1:45 our luggage arrived. We were exhausted but had to be up early to get breakfast and get to the meeting with our travel rep. We were told there was no shuttle to take us into town nor was there s shuttle to take us to the road where we could get a bus. The walk was a good 10min. IF you were in good shape...we opted for a cab that cost us between 15 and 16 US each way depending on the day. The food was boring and bland..same old thing everyday. The "6" Al a Carte's were a joke! The very same places we ate lunch and breakfast everday were divided into two rooms in the evening and one side became the seafood and the other became the steakhouse restaurants. The steaks were thrown "frozen" onto a grill and there you have it. The entertainment was a joke, the mosquito's were terrible, and there really wasn't anywhere to sit back and relax in the evening that was comfortable. We spent the evenings in our room watching TV. Look out for they will try to talk you into attending there "BIG CELEBRATION" which turns out to be a time share.

Just came back from our trip from 9/2 through 9/7. Overall, for my first experience in Mexico this was a great place to stay. I would recommend learning some basic spanish before you visit because not all staff can understand english (even at the main desk; mainly at off peak hours). Also, bring bug spray, misquitos everywhere! even with spray and re-applying every few hours i have bites all over. Room Quality: Would have received a 5 star rating but getting bit by bugs at night was not fun. bed and pillows very comfortable. shower/tub was unusually high to step into, older guests have had trouble getting in and out safely. Cleanliness: Staff was very prompt at cleaning; room service, cleaning up empty cups and sweeping walkways. Activities: A good amount of activities however there could have been more. Show quality was great. DJ at the beach was weak. Equipment didnt work and he def. didnt know how to use the soundboard. Dining: Great food. We visited 5 of the resturantes on site: Oriental- waiter was annoying and didnt understand english that well. food was ok nothing special but i personally am not a fan of this food type. Festival: buffett style, where you prob will eat the first night your there. good, well rounded selection. French: If you like big portions avoid. Steakhouse: Excellent and nice view of the beach Mexican: Excellent and If you like big portions :) Pool: Great pools, note if you dont like topless bathing dont visit this area. Staff/Service: Great friendly service however not all can speak english (which i expected) Value: Overall a great value. Great resort. Do your homework all your excersions before you head down, they will offer trips but prices "blank"

We stayed here for a week. You may sometimes wonder what kind of food your getting for all inclusive, but rest assured you will get fabulious meals. I don't think we had one bad thing at any of I think 5 resturants. The atmosphere is great. The rooms were beautiful and the beds were very comfortable. We will definatly be back soon.
