Translating as “Orange Blossom Coast”, the Costa del Azahar extends from Almenara to Vinaros in the Spanish province of Castellon. It’s renowned for its golden beaches and countryside dotted with orange and lemon groves and features coastal villages dominated by centuries-old castles and fortifications.
For sweeping views across the Costa del Azahar, head to the 13th-century Peñíscola Castle, which perches atop a rocky crag overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Wander around the 14th-century walls of enchanting Morella and marvel at the Moorish fortification of Benicassim, which is famed for its international music festival.
On the Costa del Azahar, you can take your pick of beautiful beaches, which include the dune-backed sands of La Romana in Alcossebre and Playa de la Concha in Oropesa. Hiking trails wind through the rugged mountains of Serra d'Irta Natural Park and the Desert de les Palmes, home to the remains of an ancient monastery.
Getting there
Costa del Azahar is around 30 minutes’ drive from Valencia Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe and North Africa. Trains connect from Valencia to towns along the Costa del Azahar while renting a car is the most convenient way of accessing its beaches.
