Where to stay in Zaragoza

About Zaragoza

Mesmerising Zaragoza will enchant you with its mix of Baroque, Gothic and Mudéjar architecture. The city is the capital of the Aragon region and enjoys a spectacular setting on the Ebro River. Stroll around the atmospheric old town, eat your way through the city’s tapas bars and visit one of the most beautiful churches in Spain.

Things to do

Much of the historic centre is pedestrianised and you’ll love exploring the tree-lined streets and spacious boulevards. Many of the historic buildings have been reimagined as atmospheric cafes, bakeries and sweet shops. Others house boutiques selling artisan jewellery, antiques and handmade souvenirs.

Plaza del Pilar stretches for 400 metres and is lined with historic buildings, including the magnificent Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar. The church welcomes you with an awe-inspiring Baroque façade and is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in Spain. A lift takes you up the north-west tower, where you can enjoy sweeping views over the city.

Built in the 11th century, Aljafería recalls the Islamic era. Visit the Moorish palace independently or join a guided tour to learn more about the rich history and heritage of the royal stronghold. Don’t miss the lavish “Salón de Oro” throne room.

Zaragoza is one of the largest cities in Spain and has a vibrant food and wine scene to match. Enjoy lunch at sun-drenched al fresco cafes and spend your evening hopping between tapas bars. Try local dishes like “ternasco” milk-fed lamb and “chilindron” roasted chicken served with mountain asparagus.

Getting around

Zaragoza is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot while rental bikes are an eco-friendly way to get around the city. Zaragoza is a 3.5-hour drive from Barcelona and four hours from Madrid. Trains run to Barcelona in around 1.5 hours. Zaragoza Airport is a 20-minute drive away.
