About Via del Corso

From pizza and gelato to postcards and key chains, Via del Corso is one of Rome’s biggest tourist thoroughfares. Along its 1.5 kilometre stretch sit a myriad of must visit city sites, including Baroque churches Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria. Art Nouveau style arcade Galleria Alberto Sordi enchants visitors with its elegant stained glass roof and kaleidoscope of boutique stores, while the Palazzo Doria Pamphili houses one of the city’s finest art collections. In-between shopping for souvenirs, taking sanctuary in churches and admiring Italian masterpieces, exploring Via del Corso calls for hours.

While Rome’s historic centre is characterised by narrow alleyways and intimate piazzas, Via del Corso breaks the norm with its perfectly straight footprint. In ancient times Via del Corso’s 10-metre-wide and 1.5-kilometre-long proportions were considered luxurious. However today it’s lined with just two slender sidewalks, and two lanes of traffic which make it relatively modest compared to some of its grand European counterparts.

To the north, Via del Corso links up to the Porta del Popolo city gate, and its piazza. It serves as an entrance point to the Piazza Venezia, located in the heart of the city. Its central location means Via del Corso is within walking distance of most keynote Rome attractions. Alternatively, the street is well-serviced by public transport.

Today, Via del Corso is one of Rome’s major transportation veins. However, it wasn’t always used for tourists and traffic. In the 15th century it was a premier racetrack for the Roman Carnival, where riderless “corsa dei barberi” horses dashed around the course. Its “Via del Corso” name was inspired by its use as a racetrack, though today it’s less popular with horses, and instead attracts shoppers and sightseers by day, and moonlight strollers by night.
