Sprawling along the northern bank of the Ob River, Surgut is a historic city in the west of Siberia. It’s home to patriotic monuments and engaging local museums, as well as the world’s largest cable-stayed bridge.

Things to do

Explore the historic wooden houses and cultural displays of Old Surgut, an atmospheric open-air museum along the river banks. Alternatively, head to the Surgutskiy Krayevedcheskiy Muzey, a museum of local lore that illustrates the natural, social and political history of Surgut.

Surgut is dotted with patriotic landmarks offering insight into Russia’s rich history. Admire the Monument to the Founders of Surgut and those erected in honour of Lenin and Karl Marx, as well as a statue honouring the Romantic Russian poet, Alexander Pushkin.

Travelling with kids? Head to the City Park of Culture and Recreation where they can enjoy the paddle boats and Ferris wheel. There’s a great selection of classic amusement rides, as well as picturesque walking trails through the wooded surrounds.

Drive across the world’s largest cable-stayed bridge, the Surgut Bridge, which is also one of the longest bridges in Siberia. It extends just over two kilometres in length across the Ob River and features a single central tower.

Getting around

Surgut International Airport is a 20-minute drive from Surgut and there are regular trains from Moscow to Surgut Railway Station. Although buses and fixed-route marshrutka taxis travel throughout Surgut, many of the sights are within walking distance of one another.
