About St. Vitus Cathedral

With both religious and royal significance, St Vitus Cathedral in Prague is a landmark of cultural and historical importance. It is the burial place of many Saints and the site of many monarch coronations, an architectural wonder of Gothic design and the biggest Cathedral in the Czech Republic. The dominant church of the capital, St Vitus Cathedral is more than a beautiful building. It is a symbol embodying the historical spirituality of the whole country and the Czech people.

The Cathedral is located in the huge complex of Prague Castle and welcomes guests in through an impressive bronze door, illustrated with scenes from local legend.Once inside, stained glass windows, narrow aisles, and chapels along the sides fill the Cathedral’s space. With a tower of 96.5 meters high and an intricate, beautiful mosaic spreading over 82 square meters all presiding over by a high altar, a royal crypt lies behind it. The Golden Gate is the ceremonial entrance, and the picturesque courtyards can be reached by walking through it. Guests can also climb the 287 steps up to the top of the tower. The most dominant chapel is that of St Wenceslas, which is decorated with beautiful stones and precious materials. The Crown Chamber is another important room, hosting the opulent Bohemian Crown Jewels.

As Prague Castle is such a huge part of the city, guests can reach it and its interior buildings, such as St Vitus Cathedral, in a number of ways. The easiest way is by taking Line A of the metro to Malostranska. From here, it is only a short tram ride to Prazsky Hrad, which provides the shortest route to the Castle and Cathedral.

Prince Wenceslas founded the original site when he discovered a Romanesque rotunda. It was later developed into a basilica, and then into the significant institution of the city it is today. Charles IV began building the Gothic Cathedral in 1344 as part of a larger complex dedicated to St Vitus, but the Hussite Wars of 1419 halted its construction. The Cathedral remained incomplete for many years. Eventually, it was finished in 1929, although adaptations to the interior design continued in the following years.
