St. Peter’s Basilica is located in Vatican City, a walled enclave which lies north of the city of Rome. The Basilica is perhaps the most striking example of Renaissance architecture to be found in the world. St. Peter’s is known to be one of the holiest shrines symbolising the Catholic faith and visitors arrive in the millions to catch a glimpse of its majestic presence every year.

Walking into St. Peter’s Basilica is an awe-inspiring experience, surrounded by ornate sculpted details, intricate artwork and beautiful frescoes, making it difficult to not be impressed. The central dome, or cupola, is perhaps the most recognisable feature of the Basilica, as it dominates the Roman skyline and was designed by Michelangelo who became chief architect on the project in 1546. If visitors are feeling energetic, they can climb the steps to the top of the dome. There are 551 steps in total, and alternatively there is a lift part of the way. The magnificent dome viewing area offers 360-degree views of St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City, and the city of Rome. St. Peter’s Treasury Museum also should not be overlooked, as it contains Papal mitres, historic relics, statues and many artefacts of religious significance. The vast necropolis located underneath the Basilica, known as the Vatican Grottoes houses the tombs of centuries of Popes, many who are buried here or inside the Basilica itself. If the Pope is in residence on a Sunday, he appears at the window of the Basilica to bless the crowds of thousands in St. Peter’s Square.

St. Peter’s Basilica is easy to reach from both Vatican City and central Rome. The metro is a stress-free way of arriving. Take the metro to Ottaviano-San Pietro and walk to St. Peter’s Basilica in less than 10 minutes. There are also many public bus services which stop at Vatican City and are around a 10-minute walking distance from the River Tiber.

The original church of St. Peter’s Basilica was constructed in the year 349 on the site which St. Peter is said to have been buried. The church was restored in the mid-15th century with a new Greek cross style design, a cupola, and four arms of equal length. Bramante, Raphael, da Sangallo were all involved in the new design but it wasn’t until Michelangelo got involved that the final designs were put into practice, with the building work completed after his death. Today, the famous dome of St. Peter’s Basilica can be viewed from all over Rome and visitors from all over the world come to see this marvellous feat of engineering and design, a prominent symbol of Christianity.
